Course overview

Get ahead in your dream career with this high-level, double diploma. Gain the advanced skills and specialised knowledge to work as a building or interior designer, interior decorator, or architectural draftsperson. Employment for both building and interior designers is projected to grow very strongly through to 2020.

Working on simulated projects throughout this course, you will learn to produce and present refined design ideas and plans to clients and industry. You will also develop your multidisciplinary capability, positioning you to add value to a range of organisations. You will study in our state-of-the-art facilities with expert teachers who will set you up for success.

This course meets the minimum academic requirements for a Medium Rise Building Design Licence with the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). Graduates will also be able to join the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) as a Graduate Member which, with additional workplace experience, leads to Associate Membership.

Upon successful completion of this course you may find work as a building or interior designer, interior decorator, or architectural draftsperson. You will also have a solid foundation to continue your studies in any architectural specialisation.

The successful achievement of qualification CPP50911 Diploma of Building Design, requires you to complete all 7 core units and 10 elective units from the list below.

The successful achievement of qualification MSF50213 Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration, requires you to complete all 10 core units and 19 elective units from the list below.

These qualifications have credits that are recognised within each of the qualifications. This will reduce the total amount of electives that are required to be achieved.

Selection criteria

Domestic Students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to Domestic Students:

It is highly recommended that students have successfully completed year 12 (or equivalent) or have relevant experience and/or qualifications.

 

Enrolment Entry Requirements

If you are considering a VET Student Loan for your Diploma, you will need to prove your academic suitability prior to enrolment.  Proof of your Year 12  Certificate or Certificate IV or above will be sufficient, but there are other ways to prove you meet the eligibility to enrol if you do not have these by completing and passing the BKSB Test. Please note: You will be required to hold a Construction White Card in order to complete construction site visits during this program.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You must also have access to a CAD or Gaming quality computer. Minimum specifications can be found here;

Windows machines are ideal as Autodesk programs are not available native to Mac machines. A dual boot system may be used, but there are known issues and no technical support offered for this by TAFE Queensland. Autodesk programs (Revit and AutoCad) can be downloaded for free as educational version. Required Adobe programs and Sketchup are available on campus, but it is recommended that you purchase your own copies to assist in completion of project and assessment work. More information will be supplied after enrolment or during orientation.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.
