Course overview

Develop your electrical skill set with this advanced course. Develop the practical skills and knowledge required to become a split air-conditioning and heat pump installer. With 50,000 expected job openings over the next five years for electrical tradespersons, now is the time to become a part of this growing industry.

In this course you will learn how to quote, install, and design reverse cycle air conditioning units. You will also develop skills in positioning, assembling and starting up single-head split air-conditioning units and systems to a prescribed routine. Our industry experienced teachers will give you all the support and one-on-one guidance you need to succeed.

Upon successful completion of this course you can apply for the licence required to install and decommission single-head split system air-conditioners (up to 18 kilowatts) and become a split air-conditioning and heat pump installer.

Entry requirements

Before attending the course, the applicant must apply to Australia Refrigeration Council (ARC) www.arctick.org for a Classroom Trainee Refrigerant Handling Licence.  This can take up to two weeks to obtain the licence, so please apply early.  Participants must be a qualified Electrician or hold a Restricted Electrical Licence.  Participants must have a valid email address.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, long leather gloves to AS2161, and hair protection. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
