Boost your career in the bicycle retail, service and repair industry with this mid-level course that will set you up with the practical skills you need to succeed. Develop your experience, knowledge and skills to gain employment in the bicycle industry.

The popularity of cycling has boomed in recent years, with commuters increasingly choosing cycling over other forms of transport, and individuals and families pursuing cycling as a leisure activity. As a result the bike retail and repair industry has performed strongly, with growth projected to continue in the medium term, driving job opportunities.

You will learn to diagnose problems, and repair and service wheel hubs, mechanical and hydraulic braking systems, steering and suspension, and more. You will also develop skills and knowledge associated with designing, building and repairing wheels and frames, and removing and fitting accessories. Our highly-experienced team of industry professionals will guide you through a broad range of practical and mechanical skills on a variety of bicycles and provide links to industry to help develop your career.

Successful completion of this course will provide the knowledge and practical skills you need to confidently work within the bicycle retail and repair industry, and, if completed as part of an apprenticeship, allows you to apply for a trade qualification.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of clear safety glasses to AS 1336 or 1337, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, mechanic gloves, and ear plugs or muffs. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard protective clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks after enrolment, during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary, a USB, and a calculator.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
