Course overview

Kick start your career with this entry-level course. Develop all the skills and knowledge needed to become an upholsterer, with the opportunity to specialise in production upholstery.

You will learn how to select, cut, machine sew and fit a variety of fabrics and leather materials, produce loose covers, and dismantle and reassemble furniture. You will also develop a range of transferable skills that could be used in a range of trades or even non-trade industries. Our experienced and passionate trainers will give you the one-on-one guidance you need to succeed.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as an upholsterer or production upholsterer.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship or traineeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice or trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes. This includes the use of safety glasses, protective footwear with covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip soles to AS2210, long leather gloves to AS2161, hair protection, ear protection - ear muffs or ear plugs that conform to the Australian Standard AS 1269 or 1270. You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing. If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

Materials list: Training record book. Calculator (basic). Pencil HB. Eraser. Pen. Standard Ruler.  A4 folder for handouts. Loose A4 paper with ring binder cover.

Year 12 graduates: start trade training fee free, here’s how.

You are eligible for fee-free training for this course if you:

  • have completed Year 12 in Queensland and hold a Senior Statement issued by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority or equivalent certificate that confirms you have completed Year 12 in Queensland.
  • enrol and start training with an approved training provider by the end of the calendar year following the completion of year 12.
  • live permanently in Queensland.
