Course overview

Develop your career as a surveying assistant or technician with this advanced course. You will gain the skills required to support a surveying team including using surveying tools and equipment, using computer programs, analysis of data, and report writing. This course is an ideal stepping stone to employment or further training in the field.

In 2015 there were over 50,000 people employed as architectural, building and surveying technicians. Job openings over the next five years are expected to remain solid with steady demand in building and construction, government land development, and mining industries.

This course covers complex surveying duties and spatial information services. You will learn how to use global navigation satellite systems and gain skills in computations, computer-aided drawing, terrestrial technologies, and project set out. Our teachers are experts in the field with close ties to industry to ensure our training reflects the latest industry practice.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to complete complex surveying and spatial information activities. If completed as part of an apprenticeship this course will also allow you to apply for a trade qualification.

Entry requirements

This qualification is offered through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process only. 

Students interested in undertaking this qualification must have knowledge, experience and skills for this qualification and must already be working in the industry. 

Students need to be able to perform surveying computations, produce computer-aided drawings and operate spatial software applications in the surveying industry.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
