Embark upon a career in a wide variety of information service areas with this entry-level course. Libraries are central of our communities offering a diverse range of activities and learning opportunities for people of all ages. With a certification in Library and Information Services you will have the practical skills necessary to assist people with general inquiries, provide information, and maintain catalogues of information. This qualification provides skills that are transferable to a number of different industries including museums and art galleries, giving you greater employment opportunities.

In this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge in the library and information service industries including cataloguing tools, processing loans and returns, and maintaining information resources. You will also learn how to use social media tools to connect with the community. At TAFE Queensland our teachers are experts in their field, meaning you gain valuable knowledge from people who live and breath the industry.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to work in libraries and information services as a library officer, customer service officer, or information officer. This course also provides you with the foundation knowledge to complete further training through our pathways to higher education.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

You need to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Certificate II or III, Year 10 (or equivalent); or
  • Mature-aged entry with work experience in a related field

Vocational placement

If you are not currently working in a library or information organisation, during your course you will be required to complete vocational placement. This is important so you can start practicing your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider. TAFE Queensland may be able to assist in arranging suitable placements.

Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 10 working days of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
