This high risk work licence will ensure staff are skilled, confident and qualified to operate a boom-type elevating work platform where the length of the boom is 11 metres or more.  This unit requires a person operating a boom-type elevating work platform to plan the work, conduct routine checks, set up elevating work platform, operate elevating work platform and shut down and secure elevating work platform.

Selection criteria

Entry into this course is available via commercial/corporate arrangements only. There are no scheduled campus dates, as training and assessment is delivered on-site in the workplace.

Due to legislation, to be assessed for this qualification, you are also required to be over the age of 18 and that you have sound literacy and numeracy skills.

Resources required

Students will be provided with:

  • a training plan
  • learning materials
  • a log-book

Students will require:

  • access to the relevant equipment
  • correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as per site requirements
  • pen and note book
  • photo ID (i.e. Queensland or Interstate Driver's Licence or Passport (required on assessment day)

As training is delivered in the workplace, the employer will also need to provide a suitable room for theory training to take place. This can be negotiated with the TAFE trainer/assessor.

Need to know

TAFE Queensland South West also delivers training for operation of an EWP - scissor lift and under 11m boom lift which does not require a High Risk Work Licence.
Following the successful completion of their assessment, participants will be issued with an Assessment Summary Form (AS1). The High Risk Work (HRW) licence application (including AS1) must be lodged online within 60 days of successfully completing the practical assessment, an application fee is payable at time of lodgement. Following lodgement, enquiries regarding your application should be directed to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
