Course overview

Tinker Labs are practical workshops to develop valuable skills in IoT. We introduce new tools and skills that are used by those in; STEM, Makers, DIY’s, Engineers, Designers, Startups, Inventors, and Creators in general.

This Lab will use all the components made and skills gained from previous Labs.  The result is to have a sensor connect as an edge device to the internet via the cloud service to our basic app.

We will connect use previous sensor with the Raspberry Pi, and connect to our Firebase app to demonstrate an end to end solution.

This course is a must for anyone involved in the following; STEM’s, computing, IoT, electronics, security systems, home automation, robotics, teaching, automation.

Selection criteria

This unit requires completion or prior understanding of all the topics covered in the IoT series.

Firebase accounts and development environments must already be setup.

An understanding of information systems is beneficial. 

An ability to use computers and internet browsers essential.

Participants should be comfortable with learning technical jargon.

Resources required

All Tinker Labs Kits will be required and preloaded;

  • Tinker Labs Pi Kit
  • Tinker Labs Electronics Starter Kit
  • Tinker Labs Arduino Starter Kit

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
