WiFi

Free WiFi is available for students at most TAFE Queensland campuses.*

You can use the WiFi to access your course materials, online services, and more. By using the WiFi you are agreeing to the student rules and policies.

*excluding Bamaga, Bowen, Charters Towers, Cloncurry, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba, Normanton, Palm Island, and Thursday Island.

Welcome to the TAFE Queensland guide to connecting to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network using your Android device.

1. To connect to the network open the settings app

2. Select the Wifi option from your settings app.

3. You will now see all the available WiFi networks in your area.

4. Select the network called TAFE_OPEN.

5. An authentication window will open and you will now be required to enter some login information into the Identity field. Leave the settings for phase 2 authentication and CA certificate as they are.

6. In the Identity field please enter your username, remember your username

7. Is your student ID number entered in the following format like this example.

studentnumber@student.tafe (e.g. 123456789@student.tafe).

 8. Now scroll down to the password field and enter your password, remember your password is your network password.

 9. Now select connect.

10. Your device will now take a moment to make the connection to the TAFE_OPEN network.

11. You will now see the TAFE_OPEN Wifi network has the status of connected on your list of available WiFi networks.

Welcome to the TAFE Queensland guide to connecting to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network using your IOS device.

1. To connect to TAFE’s Wifi, open the settings app

2. Select the Wifi option on the left of your settings app.

3. You will now see all the available Wifi networks in your area.

4. Select the network called TAFE_OPEN.

5. Enter your username and password.

6. Your username uses your student ID number in the following format like this example.

studentnumber@student.tafe (e.g. 123456789@student.tafe).

7. Your password is your network password.

8. Now select join.

9. A certificate will appear asking you for further confirmation. Select trust.

10. Your device will now take a moment to make the connection to the TAFE_OPEN network.

11. Your successful connection will be now be confirmed with a tick next to the network named TAFE_OPEN.

Welcome to the TAFE Queensland guide to connecting to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network using your MAC OSX device.

1. Find the WiFi icon on the status menu. The status menu is located on the top right of your screen.

2. Click on the WiFi icon, a dropdown menu will appear showing you all networks located in your area. Click on the network name TAFE_OPEN.

3. On you have selected the network TAFE_OPEN a dialogue box will appear asking you to enter your Username and Password.

4. Enter your username and password.

5. Your username uses your student ID number in the following format like this example.

studentnumber@student.tafe (e.g. 123456789@student.tafe).

6. Your password is your network password.

7. Once you have successfully entered you username and password click on join.

8. You will then get an additional authentication popup, click on continue.

9. You will now be asked to confirm changes to your security settings. Enter the username and password you use for your device.

11. Finally you can confirm you are connected to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network by again clicking on the WiFi icon on the top right of your screen. The TAFE_OPEN will appear on the drop down menu with a tick next to it.

Welcome to the TAFE Queensland guide to connecting to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network using your Windows 7.  You will need to manually set up a connection to Tafe’s WiFi network

1. Locate the WiFi icon in the bottom right of your screen.

2. Right Click on the WiFi icon, then click the Network and Sharing Centre option.

3. Click on “Set up a new connection or network”. A window called the Setup a Connection or Network will open.

4. Choose “Manually connect to a wireless network”

5. You will now be required to enter the following information.

a. In the field called Network name enter the following , TAFE_OPEN in all caps.

b. From the drop down menu option Security type select the option called WPA2-Enterprise.

c. Then uncheck the box called start this connection automatically and click next.

d. You will now be required to change some more settings, click on change connection settings, a new window will open up, now click on the security tab.

e. Make sure the remember my credential box is checked and then click on the settings button.

f. Another window will now open called Protected EAP Properties. Uncheck the box called Validate server certificate and also uncheck the box called Enable Fast Reconnect.

g. Now click on the button called Configure, a small window will appear , un check the box called Automatically use my windows logon name and password, now click on OK and the window will close.

h. Click on OK again to close the Protected EAP properties window.

6. Now we are back at the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network Properties window , click on the Advanced Settings button.

7. The Advanced settings window will now open , Check the box Specified authentication mode and from the drop down menu below the check box select the option called user authentication.

8. Now click on the Save Credentials button. A window will now appear for you to enter and save your login credentials for accessing the TAFE open network.

9. Enter your login details.

10. Your username uses your student ID number in the following format like this example.

studentnumber@student.tafe (e.g. 123456789@student.tafe).

      Your password is your network password.

11. Now click on OK.

12. Once the credentials box has closed, close the remaining open windows by clicking OK, then OK again and finally click close the Manually connect to a wireless network window.

13. Now close the Network sharing window. And on the bottom right of your screen click on the WiFi Icon. You will now see all the WiFi networks available to you in your area.

14. From the list select the TAFE_OPEN network and then click connect. You may have to briefly wait for the connection to be successful.

If you want to check your WiFi connection status, click on the WiFi network Icon again and the available network list will appear, you can then confirm you are Currently connected to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network .

Welcome to the TAFE Queensland guide to connecting to the TAFE_OPEN WiFi network using your Windows 10 device.

1. On the task bar you will find the wi fi Icon. Click on the wi fi icon and a pop up will appear showing you the available wi fi networks.

2. From the list of available wi fi networks select TAFE_OPEN, once selected you will be able to click on a connect button to logon to this network.

3. You will now be asked for your username and password, enter these and then click OK.

4. Select the network called TAFE_OPEN.

5. Enter your username and password.

6. Your username uses your student ID number in the following format like this example.

studentnumber@student.tafe (e.g. 123456789@student.tafe).

7. Your password is your network password.

8. Once you have successfully entered you username and password you may then get an additional prompt asking for further confirmation.

9. Click connect again. The network will perform a quick check and then you get confirmation that you are now connected to the TAFE_OPEN wi fi network.

Student self service help

To access the system once it is launched, you will be able to log in to a student self-service portal through the TAFE Queensland website. This portal will be your one stop shop for easy access to all the information you need about your study with us.

Connect help

Connect is TAFE Queensland's Learning Management System (LMS). For courses delivered through Connect, it will give you access to your study resources, the ability to submit assessments and communicate with teachers and classmates, the flexibility to study anywhere, any time, and more. Your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) will tell you if your course is delivered through Connect. Your account information will be included in this documentation and/or emailed to you.

Can't log into Connect

Wrong website

Confirm you are accessing https://connect.tafeqld.edu.au/d2l/login

Wrong login credentials

Check you are using the correct username (your student number) and the password that was emailed to you upon enrolment (or updated since).

Forgotten or expired password

Reset your password via the TAFE Password Manager.

Email not correct

Passwords are sent to your email. If your email is incorrect in our systems, this will prevent password reset from working via the TAFE Password Manager. Check that the email you provided TAFE Queensland is correct and that the reset email isn’t in your junk folder. To update your email contact us or log in to Student self service.

Can't find or access course or specific units

Not enrolled

Check that you are enrolled. If you are not enrolled, contact us to enrol. If you are enrolled and cannot access Connect, contact us. Please note that units/courses will not be available until the official Start of Study date (SOS).

Enrolled prior to Start of Study (SOS)

If you enrolled prior to your course commencement date, you will not be able to access your units until your Start of Study date (SOS). Additionally, you will not be able to access your units to make any amendments once the Close of Study date (COS) has passed. If your course/intake has commenced and you are unable to view your units, please contact us.

Teacher has not made it available

Confirm with your teacher if they are using Connect for your class (as not all classes have an online component). Please note that units/courses will not be available until the official Start of Study date (SOS).

Experiencing technical difficulties

Technical issues or device limitation

Check that your computer/device supports Connect using the System Check. If technical issues continue, try using a different web browser and/or a different computer or device.
